Qld: Migrants boost Queensland's population

Queensland's population has swelled .. as 22 thousand 660 overseas migrants have joined
the interstate exodus to Queensland in the last financial year.

It has the highest population growth rate in the country .. last recorded at two per
cent in June.

But interstate arrivals have been the biggest contributor to Queensland's population
increase .. ahead of overseas migrants and newborns.





Immigration Minister AMANDA VANSTONE says Over 123 thousand migrants arrived on Australian
shores from 200 countries this year .. with the biggest influx coming from the UK.

She says nearly one in four of Australia's 20 million people are born overseas.

The Australian Bureau of Stats has calculates the nation's overall growth rate to be
one new resident every two minutes .. with overseas migrants arriving at a rate of one
every four minutes.
