Main stories in today's AM program

SYDNEY, Aug 1 AAP - Main stories in today's AM program:

fast. Prime Minister Kevin Rudd says Australia is facing difficult global economic conditions
and that his government is doing what it can to responsibly manage the economy.

* Radovan Karadzic, the former Bosnian Serb leader, stands accused of some of the most
horrific crimes since the second world war, and has appeared at the UN War Crimes Tribunal
overnight. A legal expert has predicted that the trial will run for years, rather than
months.

* There is an uneasy peace in one of the hotbeds of the Middle East as Hamas tries
hard to prove that it can uphold it's end of the bargain.

* The politically explosive issue of race has emerged at the forefront of the American
presidential campaign, with Barack Obama being accused of playing the race card.

* The US space agency NASA has confirmed that it has found water on Mars.

* Young farmers across Australia say another drought could wipe out a generation of family farms.

* There are growing signs that Australia's slowing economy could prompt a cut in interest
rates before the end of the year.
